By partnering with Canada to produce drones at scale within Canada, Ukraine is helping alleviate one of the Canadian Armed Forces’ biggest issues: over-reliance on American military hardware.
Ukraine has also demonstrated the importance of alliances for middle powers. Middle powers need a variety of allies and cannot rely too extensively on one country, as the United States’ pivot on Ukraine demonstrates.
Next week, the inaugural Canada Investment Summit will be held in Toronto to attract hundreds of billions of dollars in international investment into Canada to help cushion the blow of the continuing trade war with the U.S. The event is being led by Prime Minister Mark Carney and co-hosted by big Canadian pension funds.
In a note to clients earlier this week, Matthew Murphy, mining analyst with BMO Capital Markets, said he expects the sector to play a central role in discussions at the summit, and he addressed the key question of where capital is needed the most.
In a web panel discussion on Thursday, Mr. Murphy said significantly more investment in mining infrastructure could be enormously beneficial for the industry and reward multiple companies.

Frank McKenna will be at next weeks’s inaugural Canada Investment Summit. As deputy chair of TD Securities and chair of Brookfield Corporation, not to mention a former premier of New Brunswick and ambassador to the U.S., he knows something about negotiating big deals. A self-described “interested observer” of the main summit, he helped arrange two of its side events – the Milken Institute’s first-ever Global Dialogues event in Canada and the Canadian Venture Capital and Private Equity Association’s Global Growth Forum.
“It’s really the most interesting event that I’ve been part of in decades in Canada. I’ve never seen anything like this. I was just talking to a [cabinet] minister who’s got a bunch of bilateral [meetings] and things going on that I didn’t even know about. This is like a Super Bowl with hundreds of tailgate parties. At Brookfield we’ve got a dinner Tuesday night that’s got more money in the room than I knew was on the planet. I just got asked to host a dinner with the richest guy in Africa, who’s coming here.”
