Ban on imports from illegal Israeli settlements in the West Bank

Canada, France and Britain are introducing a ban on imports from from Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, joining Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium, which are taking similar action. Other nations, including Sweden, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Portugal are considering similar restrictions.

In a joint statement, Prime Minister Mark Carney, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and French President Emmanuel Macron said “systematic settlement expansion in the West Bank” poses a threat to the possibility of a two-state solution that would see the establishment of a Palestinian homeland alongside Israel.

US Justice Dept. stops cooperating with Canadian government

The U.S. Justice Department’s antitrust division was instructed earlier this ​week to pause all work with the Canadian government, ‌the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday, citing emails, amid a trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa.

Lynda Marshall, chief of the antitrust division’s international section, ordered officials in an email Wednesday to stop all cooperation ​on cases and ​engagement on ⁠policy issues with Canadian authorities, without providing a reason for the directive, the report ​said.

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a new world map that reflects countries’ true relative sizes, after African nations urged the UN to right a centuries-old wrong.

The “Correct the Map” resolution – put forward by African Union member states, as well as the Bahamas – passed with overwhelming support: 164 member states voted in favour, six abstained, while the U.S. stood alone and voted against it.

Cuba announces free-market reforms amid American pressure

Cuba unveiled regulations on Thursday aimed at attracting foreign investment, trade and tourism to the Caribbean island as it continues to adopt free-market ​reforms under heavy pressure from the U.S. and the resulting crippling economic crisis.

The country’s Gaceta, ‌or national registry, published 34 pages of new rules and law changes that, at least on paper, make the island’s white-sand beaches, workers and real estate more accessible to ​foreign and national investors.
