Statistics Canada: Production of crude oil and equivalent products increased 3.1% year over year to 25.6 million cubic metres in June, with growth from both oil extraction (non-oil sands) (+4.7%) and oil sands extraction (+1.1%). June marks the 13th consecutive month of year-over-year production gains.
Exports of crude oil increased 6.4% to 20.7 million cubic metres in June, primarily due to a 4.0% increase in exports to the U.S.
Production of marketable natural gas rose 8.0% to 700.8 million gigajoules in June, the highest year-over-year increase since February (+9.0%). Higher production in both British Columbia (+12.7%) and Alberta (+5.3%) contributed to the monthly gain in June.
Exports of natural gas grew 13.5% to 308.5 million gigajoules in June, the highest year-over-year increase since March 2025 (+14.7%).
Total electricity generation in Canada was up 6.2% year over year to 48.9 million megawatt-hours (MWh) in June. Hydroelectricity increased 14.4% year over year to 28.0 million MWh, offsetting decreases from nuclear (-4.5%), combustible (-2.5%), solar (-10.3%) and wind (-0.4%) generation sources.
Imports of electricity from the U.S., Canada’s only electricity trade partner, fell 19.3% year over year to 1.2 million MWh in June, while exports jumped 80.4% to 5.0 million MWh, the highest level since January 2023.
