Russian content farms have been pushing pro-separatist content into online communities and using Canadians to “launder” those messages by sharing such material on their social media feeds, the researchers said.

The U.S. activity, on the other hand, is more overt, with prominent American influencers, podcasts and websites openly promoting Alberta separation, said Brian McQuinn, co-director of the Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Data, and Conflict at the University of Regina, according to Grant Robertson at the Globe and Mail.

“Foreign aligned platforms continue to amplify anti-government grievances and issues associated with the Alberta separatist movement,” the July report said.

Canadians say Canada should either respond with counter-tariffs (36%) or keep negotiating without any counter-tariffs (30%) if Trump’s new round of tariffs go into effect Wednesday, reports Uday Rana at Global News.

However, 18% said Canada should “offer concessions to the U.S., such as ending bans on American alcohol and easing dairy restrictions, if that gets the tariffs removed.”

Of the 1,499 Canadians polled from Aug. 7 to 12, 74% said the trade war with the U.S. has already impacted their household finances.

The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Honourable Randeep Sarai, Secretary of State (International Development), issued a joint statement, which reads, in part:

“Today marks five years since Afghanistan fell to the Taliban. Canada strongly condemns the extreme repression, widespread human rights violations and abuses as well as continued erosion of fundamental freedoms perpetrated by the Taliban against the Afghan people.

“Canada remains steadfast in supporting the people of Afghanistan and their aspirations for a stable, peaceful and secure country where the rights and dignity of everyone are respected.”
