Admiral Daryl Caudle, the chief of naval operations, prepared the Roosevelt’s crew for tough times ahead and a lengthy deployment at sea, especially now that Iran’s attacks on U.S. bases in the Gulf have made getting sailors to shore much more challenging. Caudle acknowledged he couldn’t say how long the Roosevelt’s deployment would last and that it could keep being extended.
“If we know we’re going into harm’s way, we should be able to project with a little bit more fidelity how long the carrier and the strike group is going to stay on station,” Caudle said, according to USNI News. “We do these extensions in little chunks, and the families don’t see any endpoint so they can plan their own lives—that creates a lot of stress for sailors.”
