Danielle Smith’s lack of interest in representing the needs and interests of the province she leads has never been more obvious than right now. At a moment of national peril — and, it should be said, growing unity — she is singularly focused on preventing Canada from even thinking about using its best piece of leverage.
“I cannot think of a more disastrous policy decision than cutting off or taxing Alberta’s oil to the United States,” she said in late August. Instead, Smith wants to continue betting on the goodwill of American politicians and the president’s ability to learn and internalize new facts. Earlier this week, amid a growing volume of increasingly deranged anti-Canada memes and attacks from American officials, Smith called on the federal government to “double down” on diplomacy and convince American officials “about the benefits of fair and free trade between Canada and the United States, and encouraging them to assist in communicating this fact to the U.S. administration.”
This falls somewhere between dangerously naive and wilfully blind.
