This is the lowest annual July-to-July (or June to June before 1946) growth in the total size of the population since 1944/1945 (+126,000; +1.0%) and the lowest growth in percentage since 1915/1916 (+20,000; +0.3%).

The fastest growth rate among the provinces from July 1, 2025, to July 1, 2026, was seen in Alberta (+1.5%). The only province or territory to see a decrease in population during this period was the Northwest Territories (-127; -0.3%).
From July 1, 2025, to July 1, 2026, growth was slower in all provinces than over the same period one year earlier (2024/2025). During this same period, the provinces of Alberta (+1.5%), New Brunswick (+1.0%), Saskatchewan (+1.0%), Prince Edward Island (+0.8%), Nova Scotia (+0.8%) and Manitoba (+0.6%) all had faster population growth rates than the country as a whole (+0.5%).
Conversely, the populations of the three largest provinces in Canada all grew at a slower pace than the country overall: Ontario (+0.3%), Quebec (+0.2%) and British Columbia (+0.1%). These provinces tend to welcome the largest share of international migrants and are thus more affected by changes in international migration levels.
