Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew says, “I think America is weaker around the world today than it was a year ago. He’s about to get slaughtered in the midterms, and the cost of living is the No. 1 issue, and he is completely out of touch with the cost of living of Americans.”

“I think we’ve got the upper hand. They’re back on their heels right now. They’re coming to us right now, and so I think we should fight.”

“But it’s not about me, it’s about Team Canada — what we’ve been saying for the past year, year and a half, since all this tariff nonsense started.”

Quebec Premier Christine FrĂ©chette says lifting the ban is “possible” in her province, pending analysis of how new Canada-U.S. trade terms will impact Quebec’s economy, reports Jeff Lagerquist at CBC News.

“We need to have a global view. The complete view of the impact on Quebec’s economy,” she told CBC News on Thursday. “If it is globally positive, it is possible that we put back the alcohol on the shelves of the SAQ.”

The E1 settlement will undermine the prospect of the two-state solution by driving a wedge through the West Bank and harming the territorial contiguity of the Palestinian Territories.

Israel claims its military did not commit a criminal act when it killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers in Gaza more than two years ago

Jacob Flickinger, a military veteran from Quebec, was among seven staff working with World Central Kitchen in April 2024 when Israeli airstrikes hit their humanitarian aid convoy.

The 33-year-old Canadian died two years ago in Gaza while participating in the humanitarian aid mission. The aid group, which distributes food in Gaza, said at the time it had coordinated with the military over the convoy’s movement.

North Korea launched several ballistic missiles toward the Sea of Japan on Thursday, according to South Korea’s military—just a day after the North dismissed Trump’s seeming attempt at appeasement by cutting back on joint military training with South Korea, according to Alex Nguyen at Mother Jones.

“The provocative, aggressive nature of the drills won’t change even though their duration and size were reduced,” Kim Yo Jong, a top figure in North Korea’s ruling party and supreme leader Kim Jong Un’s sister, said on Wednesday.

 

Americans are now paying more in interest on their debt than on defence

During his first campaign for president, Donald Trump promised to pay down the national debt within eight years.

Since then, it has doubled.

Trump has accumulated as much debt since entering the White House as every president from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined.

U.S. starts deporting people to Liberia

The U.S. sent 20 deportees to Liberia as part of 1,200 migrants that the African country will receive under a new deal.

The 1,200 deportees will include African nationals and also nationals from North America, South America and the Caribbean, according to the Liberian information minister, Jerolinmek Piah.

The Liberia-US agreement is among the largest third-country deportations driven by the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration, according to the Associated Press.

80% of Canadians support U.S. alcohol ban

Released on August 19, 2026 — Pollara’s Trump Tracker shows 9% of Canadians feel positively and 80% feel negatively about President Trump, a record high in negativity since the Trump Tracker launched in January 2024.

As trade talks intensify, Canadians are feeling very positive about Prime Minister Carney, with 59% approving and 32% disapproving of how he’s handling Canada-US relations. This represents a 16-point increase in approval of Carney on this file over the past year.
