EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said the date was incompatible with a process based on candidates meeting membership requirements.
“The date of Jan. 1, 2027, was set by President Zelenskyy. Accession is based on merit: it’s clear that this date is not possible. I understand that Kyiv and many others see EU membership as a guarantee of security. The war in Ukraine has changed European geopolitics, and one of the consequences is that enlargement is once again a priority, not only for Ukraine but for others as well.”
