Trump fumes: ‘I don’t want Canadian cars, I don’t want Canadian parts, I don’t want Canadian anything.’

Trump escalated his trade war with Canada on Sunday by declaring he wants the US to reject all products coming from Canada — unless those companies are willing to relocate from Canada to the U.S.

“They’ve been ripping us off for decades, and it’s going to stop. This should have happened long ago with other Presidents, just as stopping Iran should have happened long ago. They want to be treated like a State, but they aren’t one. I deal with the Leadership of many Countries, but I find Canada to be the worst. They are entitled no longer!”

The costs Americans will pay for losing yet another war

NY Times: The U.S. has faced questions about quitting in just about every war it has fought since its emergence as a global power after World War II. “So much of what we’ve been involved in these last several decades is really policing the empire,” said Andrew R. Hoehn, a senior analyst at RAND Corporation, a think tank that studies security matters.

In most instances, American troops have gone to war to impose order on an unruly world, or to defend American values. “We’re not fighting existential conflicts,” Mr. Hoehn said.

The new era of American colonialism

Many Venezuelans suspected that there was going to be a price to pay for Trump’s brazen capture of their autocratic leader, Nicolás Maduro, who was arrested by U.S. forces in January.

On Friday, that cost became clear when Trump announced that the U.S. would be taking majority control of a vast part of Venezuela’s oil reserves — national resources long considered by many in the country to be a birthright.

By Saturday, many Venezuelans were grappling with whether they were willing to pay that price.

Iceland voters has rejected EU accession talks [updated]

RUV.is: The Icelandic government says it will respect the outcome of Sunday’s referendum, in which a majority voted against resuming negotiations on European Union membership. Government leaders welcomed the high voter turnout and said the focus would now turn to key domestic priorities.

The Guardian: After a nail-biting overnight count, the well-funded no campaign rejoiced on Sunday morning as the broadcaster RUV declared it the winner with about 52.8% of the vote. Given the size of Iceland’s population – barely 400,000 – the margins were tiny.

Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence conference begins Monday in Victoria

The annual Indo-Pacific Chiefs of Defence conference begins Monday at the Victoria Conference Centre and will focus on strengthening collective security.

Gen. Jennie Carignan, Canada’s chief of the defence staff, and Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, are co-hosting the three-day conference, which was first held in 1998.

The conference typically includes military leaders from countries such as Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

Colin Chia, an associate professor of international relations at the University of Victoria, said he’s not expecting policy announcements to come out of the conference, as attendees are “not really decision-makers themselves, but really the ones who execute them.”
