68% of Canadians approve of how PM Carney is handling Canada-US relations

Overall approval of Prime Minister Mark Carney on Canada-US relations has risen from 58% in early August to 68%.

Only 40% of Conservative voters approve of how Prime Minister Carney is handling the file.

Canadians are overwhelmingly supportive of PM Carney’s decision to walk away from trade talks with the U.S. (78% agree) and to place retaliatory tariffs on some US goods (78%).

Approval of how provincial governments are handling Canada-US relations has also risen in every region except Alberta. Alberta remains the only province where more voters are negative than positive towards how their provincial government is managing Canada-US relations.

Mark MacKinnon: Rather than seeking to turn down the temperature in the dispute with Germany, Dmitry Medvedev, a former Russian president who now serves as deputy head of the country’s National Security Council, issued new threats. He accused Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s government of fabricating the Leipzig incident, while at the same time saying that such sabotage would have been “the mildest form of retribution” for Germany’s military support for Ukraine.

“They deserve a direct strike against all German facilities manufacturing military hardware” for Ukraine, Mr. Medvedev wrote on Telegram. “And, quite possibly, against certain other locations in Berlin as well.”

‘State-sponsored terrorism’: EU blasts Russia for attempted drone attack at German airport

Chief EU diplomat Kaja Kallas on Sept. 2 lambasted Moscow after Berlin accused Russia of an attempted drone attack against Leipzig Airport last month.

“It is clear that it has all the hallmarks of state-sponsored terrorism,” Kallas told reporters ahead of an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Wicklow, Ireland, on Sept. 2, as European diplomats are set to discuss countermeasures against Russia.

Semafor: “Nine weeks before the midterms, House Republicans aren’t holding back their criticism of the president’s latest tariff moves.

“In a closed-door meeting on Wednesday with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Republican Study Committee members were “freewheeling in their expressions,” one Republican lawmaker said.

“The US-Canada trade war was “darn close” to the “unanimous subject” of the meeting, the lawmaker added. “People are just looking for a path forward.”

Netherlands moves billions in gold to London in ‘crisis preparedness’ move

The Dutch central bank (DNB) has confirmed that billions of dollars in gold has been taken out of north America and relocated to London, citing “increasing geopolitical unrest”.

DNB said on Wednesday that 86 tonnes of gold had been removed from the US and Canada in a complex operation that took several months. It is now being held by the Bank of England, where the precious metal can be traded more easily “in a crisis situation”.

Bank president Olaf Sleijpen said the move was “necessary to strengthen our resilience and preparedness”.

The United Nations has acknowledged that Earth has lost its chance to prevent some of the worst of global warming’s harms. Officials say the world must now figure out how to get temperatures below the danger zone and back to safety.

This means decades of increased weather-related disasters, rising seas, extinctions, and melting ice and glaciers.
