U.S. envoys meet with President ​Zelenskyy in Kyiv in a renewed effort to end Russia’s four-and-a-half-year invasion of Ukraine

Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other top Ukrainian officials in central Kyiv on Sunday. Kushner and Witkoff travelled from Moscow after meeting with Putin.

President Zelenskyy has said a window of opportunity to make peace exists before the U.S. begins focusing on its next presidential election.

The first round ​of talks between Ukrainian and U.S. negotiators lasted about three hours.

“Substantive, important, and we ​are very encouraged,” Witkoff told reporters after the talks, which also included a working lunch.

Europe could not sustain a war of attrition with Russia

At a forum convened by the Munich Security Conference (MSC), defence planners working with NATO, said they fear that if war broke out with Russia, Europe could not currently sustain a prolonged war of attrition owing to a public lack of war readiness.

The surge in support for the populist forces in Europe’s main military states is endangering proposals to take on a new coordination role as the US reduces its commitments to the defence of Europe.

One recent British cabinet member admitted the west had been “crap” at educating its public about the scale of the hybrid conflict with Russia. Another UK diplomat claimed successive British prime ministers had done nothing to explain the scale of the threat.

Allied forces practice hunting for Russian submarines

Allied forces gathered in the waters off Iceland to practice hunting for Russian submarines, drawing German surveillance planes to scour the waves alongside Canadian warships and Belgian fighter jets.

But for the first time since this decades-old annual exercise began, no American ships or aircraft joined the chase.

The NATO forces, led by a French commander, aimed to prove to themselves and Moscow that they could protect the continent without American leadership.

“We see Europe and Canada stepping up, and we see it literally here in Iceland,” Iceland’s Defense chief, Jónas Allansson, said in an interview.

Witkoff and Kushner arrive in Kyiv in their first official visit to Ukraine

Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv on Sunday in their first official visit to Ukraine as part of a renewed push for peace more than 4½ years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The trip by the Americans follows a meeting with Putin in Moscow on Saturday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his government is ready for a “constructive” discussion.

Witkoff and Kushner again travel to Moscow

Footage released by the Kremlin showed Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner being greeted by Putin.

On Sunday the envoys will travel to Kyiv for more talks.

Since the start of the war, American envoys have travelled numerous times to Russia, but this will be their first such visit to Kyiv since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

This is Steve Witkoff’s eight visit to the Kremlin since Trump took office in January 2025.

‘We’re going to use all our electricity here’: Minister Hodgson

“Nothing would make me happier than when the United States asks us for more electricity to say, ‘You know what, we’ve got a lot of mines we need to develop in northern British Columbia,’” Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson said.

“Nothing would make me happier than just saying, ‘You know what, we’re going to use all our electricity here. We’re going to build new mines, new processing facilities.’”

85% of Canadians support rejecting the Trump administration’s proposed trade deal

A Nanos Research survey conducted for The Globe and Mail and CTV News found that 85% of respondents support or somewhat support Prime Minister Mark Carney’s rejection of the proposed trade deal with the Trump administration.

80% support or somewhat support Ottawa’s plan to retaliate with dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on a range of U.S. products, scheduled to take effect on Tuesday.
