Canada is in talks to back an EU loan for Ukraine, as Prime Minister Mark Carney seeks closer transatlantic ties to diversify the country away from the US.

Financial Times reports the two sides hope to agree on how much Canada will contribute to the EU-led C$144 billion (€90 billion) loan to Ukraine before an EU summit in Montreal at the end of October.

The loan for Ukraine will finance Kyiv’s budgetary and defence needs in 2026 and 2027.

The FT reports that Prime Minister Carney is seeking to build an alliance of liberal powers committed to the multilateral order and hopes to demonstrate commitment to European allies by contributing to the Ukraine Support Loan. The UK is the only other non-EU country to have participated in the loan.
