If Canada continues to hold the line when Trump applies pressure—if we refuse demands that compromise our sovereignty and successfully execute on durable new partnerships—that will inspire more countries than a speech ever could. But, of course, we can only serve as the world’s anti-Trump blueprint if we endure. So far, Canada’s economy is bending but not breaking. In fact, it grew by 0.8 per cent in the second quarter. Exports rose by 3.6 per cent, their biggest increase in more than three years. The country lost 42,000 jobs in August, but still had 217,000 more than a year earlier. These figures are not a final verdict, but they are hopeful signs of the country’s resilience—much more than mere survival.
